Studying in the Leipzig Conservatory he started out composing classical music before quickly moving into the cinema world. He studied in London at Trinity College and some of his earliest film music work was in Britain acting as musical director and composer for Sir Alexander Korda before immigrating to the United States in 1940. There he excelled, with a distinguished and prolific career scoring numerous well-known movies. Among these are several examples of classic “Film Noir” before he carved out a new reputation with several notable scores for historical and/or biblical epics such as “Ben Hur”, “Quo Vadis” and “El Cid”. He won three Oscars.
