Richard Zsigmondy

Richard Zsigmondy (1865-1929) was a recipient of the 1925 Nobel Prize in Chemistry „for his demonstration of the heterogeneous nature of colloid solutions and for the methods be used, which have since become fundamental importance in modern colloid chemistry”. He invented the ultramicroscope in the pursuit of his research. Zsigmondy was born in Vienna, but came from a famous Hungarian family both on his father’s and mother’s side. In 1907 Zsigmondy was appointed Professor and Director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Göttingen, where he remained until his retirement in February 1929.
