Who We Are

The House of Hungary Inc., a California non-profit corporation, is a member of the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages, Inc., and one of the 33 International Houses in Balboa Park.

The aim of the House of Hungary is to promote Hungarian culture, history, customs and traditions; and to organize social activities for its members.

The City of San Diego donated most of the cottages occupied today by various ethnic groups in 1936, following the San Diego Panama Exposition. We joined in 1948 and shared a cottage with the Czech and Slovaks. Our new cottage was finished in 1995 by the hard work and dedication of our members. This cottage is similar to a little farmhouse in Hungary but with the modern conveniences of today.

Our cottage is open for the public Saturdays and Sundays 12-4, with a hostess offering homemade pastries, coffee and refreshments to the visitors.

House of Hungary provides free language classes for adults and children school classes for different age groups.

House of Hungary organizes various social, cultural and fund-raising events, like the Ethnic Food Fair at the end of May and the International Christmas Festival at the beginning of December. Like every other House in HPR we give a lawn program on the HPR stage to celebrate St. Stephen and the Hungarian statehood in August.

Membership is open to all people who are interested in promoting the national culture, customs and traditions.

HOUSE OF HUNGARY is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Come visit, you will have the opportunity to meet your fellow Hungarians and guests from around the world.
